Investing in Gold ETCs
The
outbreak of Coronavirus, escalation in middle eastern tensions, the potential
re-ignition of the US-China trade war and relatively weak global growth are
forcing investors to consider the possibility of a global market downturn in
2020. In times of market turbulence, investors have often turned to gold as a
safe haven and, since their launch in 2003, physically gold-backed exchange
traded commodities, otherwise known as gold ETCs or gold ETFs, have become a popular way for investors to access this asset
class.
What are
gold ETCs?
Gold ETCs offer investors the convenience of a buying gold like a normal share
without the costs, hassle and risk of buying and storing coins or bullion
themselves. According to World Gold Council statistics, gold ETCs now hold a
record 2.947 tonnes of gold, adding 61.7 tonnes in January 2020 alone [1]. This all-time high illustrates how
significant a physical gold ETC has become as an asset allocation vehicle, particularly during
uncertain times.
Gold
runs in the blood at HANetf. Our co-CEOs Nik Bienkowski and Hector McNeil were
part of the team that launched the first ever physical gold ETC back in 2003,
(GOLD AU). In February 2020, HANetf made history again with a
distinctive new physical gold ETC, The Royal Mint Physical Gold ETC (RMAU).
Physical
Gold ETC from The Royal Mint
RMAU is
the first ever gold ETC from The Royal Mint - the official producer of UK coinage and part of
the UK Treasury. RMAU enters a competitive market and while there are many ETCs
that promise physical gold exposure (more than 12 on XETRA alone) not all are
built alike.
RMAU
offers features that are well suited to the needs of modern investors,
providing a distinctive alternative to existing options at a competitive 22bps
price.
When you
trade gold ETFs, your capital is at risk.
